Thanks to the work of eminent translators, Polish readers have access to\nliterature from all over the world.<\/strong> <\/strong>In appreciation of their expertise and unique\ncontribution to the development of culture, in 2013 the city of Gda\u0144sk founded\nan award granted in two categories: translation of a single work and lifetime\nachievement.<\/strong> <\/strong>During the 2019 \u201cFound in\nTranslation\u201d festival, the Tadeusz Boy-\u017bele\u0144ski Translation Award of the Mayor\nof Gda\u0144sk for lifetime achievement will be presented to Ma\u0142gorzata \u0141ukasiewicz,\nwhose translations from German include the works of J\u00fcrgen Habermas, Theodor W.\nAdorno, Friedrich Nietzsche, and W.G. Sebald, among others.<\/strong> <\/strong>The nominees for the translation of a single work are:<\/strong> <\/strong>Tomasz Ga\u0142\u0105zka (English), Monika Muska\u0142a (German),\nKrystyna Rodowska (French), El\u017cbieta Sobolewska (Hungarian), Andrzej Sosnowski\n(English), Marcin Szuster (English), and Teresa Worowska (Hungarian).<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tadeusz\nBoy-\u017bele\u0144ski Award honours translators of foreign literature into Polish. The Award is granted every two\nyears in two categories (translation of a single work and lifetime achievement). It is presented during the\n\u201cFound in Translation\u201d Gda\u0144sk Literary Meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Award\ncommittee, composed of Joanna Korna\u015b-Warwas, Piotr Pazi\u0144ski, Julia R\u00f3\u017cewicz,\nJustyna Sobolewska, Tomasz Swoboda, Ryszard Turczyn, and Anna Wasilewska (head),\ndecided that the 2019 Tadeusz Boy-\u017bele\u0144ski Translation Award of the Mayor of\nGda\u0144sk for lifetime achievement will go to Ma\u0142gorzata \u0141ukasiewicz for her\ntranslations of German prose, essays and philosophical works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMa\u0142gorzata\n\u0141ukasiewicz introduced Polish readers to such eminent authors as Hans Georg\nGadamer, J\u00fcrgen Habermas, Theodor W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Friedrich Nietzsche,\nRichard Wagner, Heinrich B\u00f6ll, Robert Walser, Hermann Hesse, and W.G. Sebald. The books she translated were\nnever accidental or trivial choices. She has always picked\nimportant, difficult and sophisticated texts,\u201d says Anna Wasilewska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 18 February,\nthe Award committee also selected translators shortlisted for the single\ntranslation category award, for works published between 1 December 2016 and 30\nNovember 2018. The nominees are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Tomasz Ga\u0142\u0105zka for translating Ben Fountain\u2019s Billy Lynn\u2019s Long Halftime Walk <\/em>from\nEnglish into Polish (Czarne publishing house);<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Monika Muska\u0142a for translating Elfriede Jelinek\u2019s\ndrama Rechnitz. The Exterminating Angel <\/em>from\nGerman into Polish (Korporacja Ha!art publishing house);<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Krystyna Rodowska for translating Marcel Proust\u2019s\nnovel In Search of Lost Time. Swann\u2019s Way<\/em>\nfrom French into Polish (Officyna publishing house);<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 El\u017cbieta Sobolewska for translating P\u00e9ter N\u00e1das\u2019\nnovel Book of Memories <\/em>from Hungarian\ninto Polish (Biuro Literackie publishing house);<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Andrzej Sosnowski for translating a selection of Elisabeth\nBishop\u2019s poems Santarem<\/em> from English\ninto Polish (Biuro Literackie publishing house);<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Marcin Szuster for translating Djuna Barnes\u2019 novel Nightwood <\/em>from English into Polish (Ossolineum\npublishing house);<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Teresa Worowska for translating S\u00e1ndor M\u00e1rai\u2019s Journal 1946\u201356<\/em> and Journal 1957\u201366 <\/em>from Hungarian into Polish (\u201cCzytelnik\u201d publishing\ncooperative).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Translation\nAward of the Mayor of Gda\u0144sk, in both categories, will be presented on\n12 April during a gala event accompanying the \u201cFound in Translation\u201d\nGda\u0144sk Literary Meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cFound in\nTranslation\u201d festival<\/strong> will take place on 11-13\nApril in Gda\u0144sk, inviting the audience to a literary journey to the East. This edition of the festival will begin with a lecture\nby Olga Tokarczuk. Traditionally,\nday 1 will feature the \u201cWriters and their translators\u201d format: this time, the\nprotagonist will be Andrzej Stasiuk, appearing with Margot Carlier, Renate\nSchmingdal and Sini\u0161a Kasumovi\u0107. The following\ndays will be packed with exciting conversations, such as: Paulina Wilk, Barbara\nAndrunik and Agnieszka Rayss talking to Max Cegielski about women who traverse\nthe world on their own, and Henryk Lipszyc, eminent Orientalist and translator\nfrom Japanese, discussing his life in\/with translation with Adam Lipszyc. Ben Fountain, <\/strong>Billy Lynn\u2019s Long Halftime\nWalk<\/em><\/strong>, transl. by Tomasz Ga\u0142\u0105zka:<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ga\u0142\u0105zka took on an enormous task of not only\ntranslating the novel, but also \u2013 perhaps \u2018above all\u2019 \u2013 of inventing (or even\ncreating) the conditions to discover the contemporary United States in Polish. This is not your stereotypical\nimage of the country, seemingly well-known through popular culture, but one\nthat emerges from a critical insight and clash of languages. Ga\u0142\u0105zka’s use of the street variants\nof Polish \u2013 in their contemporary rather than archaic form \u2013 was absolutely\nspot on. He translated the language of\nthe army and politics with precision and expertise. He also found a way to somersault over a pile of\nAmericanisms: the language of football, Texas, erotica and military ethos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elfriede Jelinek, Rechnitz.\nThe Exterminating Angel<\/em>, transl. by Monika Muska\u0142a (translator\u2019s\nstatement):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cElfriede Jelinek\u2019s drama Rechnitz. The Exterminating Angel <\/em>is a unique text. Written in the form of a\nhomogeneous monologue, without a list of characters, this is in fact an epic poem, a poetic monologue,\nwherein the drama is implicitly embedded. The speech of the characters and internal dramatic\ntension had to be singled out from the linguistic magma in which they reside. The difficulty of this\ntranslation involved, among others, giving the characters a linguistic shape\nwithout infringing on the limited nature of the poem with its horizontal and\nvertical dialogues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marcel Proust, In\nSearch of Lost Time. Swann\u2019s Way<\/em>, transl. by Krystyna Rodowska (from the\ntranslator\u2019s afterword):<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDecisions taken by a translator who embarks on a new\ninterpretation (all translations are, ultimately, interpretations) of an\neminent work from the past, even not too distant, have to take place in\nconstant dialogue both between source and target languages and the cultural\ncontexts, in which each of these languages is fully immersed. Given these determinants, a\nnew translation is a genuine challenge, giving rise to a gamut of complex, even\nrisky choices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

P\u00e9ter N\u00e1das, Book\nof Memories<\/em>, transl. by El\u017cbieta Sobolewska:<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Book of Memories<\/em> is a\nmonumental, legendary novel by P\u00e9ter N\u00e1das, translated into Polish by El\u017cbieta\nSobolewska. This remarkable work, which\nhas already been translated into almost all European languages, is finally\navailable to the Polish reader more than 30 years after it was originally\nreleased. For years, N\u00e1das has been\nshortlisted for the Nobel Literary Prize, he is also regarded as one of the\ngreatest innovators of contemporary Hungarian prose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elizabeth Bishop, Santarem<\/em>,\ntransl. by Andrzej Sosnowski:<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elizabeth Bishop\u2019s poems translated by Andrzej\nSosnowski and published in the Santarem<\/em>\ncollection are different to those first translated into Polish by Stanis\u0142aw\nBara\u0144czak. Sosnowski represents an\nentirely different school of translation and poetry, who emphasizes different\nplanes of meaning \u2013 the context in which the American poet returns, 20 years\nlater, is also markedly different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00e1ndor M\u00e1rai’s Journal<\/em>,\ntransl. by Teresa Worowska:<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teresa Worowska enters S\u00e1ndor M\u00e1rai’s language with\npalpable pleasure, paying attention to its imagery and rhythm, to skilfully\nshow and communicate to the Polish reader the variety of his thoughts,\nreflections, opinions, impressions and emotions provoked by the changing\nreality around him; to show the fate of one man and his family as they lose\ntheir cultural and geographical homeland \u2013 Hungary and Europe; and to show the\nmisery of a writer in emigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Djuna Barnes, Nightwood<\/em>,\ntransl. by Marcin Szuster (excerpt from the translator\u2019s afterword):<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
