Bridging the Silence to instalacja wizualno-dźwiękowa zaprojektowana do prezentacji na mostach dla pieszych, którą stworzyły Hrvoslava Brkušić, chorwacka artystka poruszająca się w obszarze multimediów i dźwięku, Deirdre Cartmill, północnoirlandzka poetka oraz Beatriz Churruca, baskijska performerka i artystka wizualna.

Dynamika instalacji odzwierciedla emocjonalną podróż, którą odbywają ludzie po doznaniu traumy przemocy: od burzy wewnętrznej na początku drogi, po spokój i wyciszenie na jej końcu. W ten sposób przejście mostu staje się zarówno symbolicznym, jak i dosłownym odbiciem podróży wewnętrznej.

Najważniejszą częścią dźwiękowej warstwy instalacji są wykorzystane w niej osobiste świadectwa osób, które doświadczyły przemocy. W każdym kolejnym miejscu prezentacji, instalacja zmienia się i bogaci o kolejne historie.

Bridging the Silence to poruszające doświadczenie dźwięków, świadectw, muzyki, wierszy oraz ciszy wewnętrznej każdego, kto zdecyduje się przekroczyć most.

Artystki realizujące projekt:

Hrvoslava Brkušić (Zagrzeb, Chorwacja) – absolwentka zagrzebskiej Akademii Sztuk Dramatycznych (specjalizacja: montaż filmowy) oraz Akademii Sztuk Pięknych, na której uzyskała magisterium na kierunku Animacja i nowe media. Jako montażystka pracowała przy szeregu filmów dokumentalnych, fabularnych i eksperymentalnych, m.in. dokumentalnym filmie „Blokada” (reż. Igor Bezinović) o protestach studenckich i walce o dostęp do darmowej edukacji czy eksperymentalnym filmie tego samego reżysera pt. „Demokracja bezpośrednia domaga się bezpośredniej przestrzeni”, który realizowany był w ramach Biennale Architektury w Wenecji.

Deirdre Cartmill (Belfast, Północna Irlandia) – poetka, absolwentka Queen’s University (specjalizacja: pisanie kreatywne). Laureatka nagród poetyckich, m.in. Nagrody Literackiej Arts Council za lata 2000, 2003, 2008 oraz 2012, stypendystka programów literackich. Jej wiersze publikowane były w wielu antologiach i magazynach literackich. Opublikowała dwa zbiory poetyckie: The Return of the Buffalo (Lagan Press, 2013) and Midnight Solo (Lagan Press, 2004). Cartmill jest również nagradzaną scenarzystką, która tworzy na potrzeby filmu, telewizji i radia.

Beatriz Churruca (Navarra Hiszpania) – absolwentka sztuk pięknych na Uniwersytecie w Barcelonie (specjalizacja: malarstwo). Zafascynowana teatrem tańca rozwijała umiejętności taneczne i chętnie używa w swoich pracach ruchu. Churruca jest niezależną producentką wydarzeń kulturalnych i animatorką kultury. Jako artystka tworzy obiekty, obrazy oraz wypracowuje sytuacje i struktury, które odzwierciedlają chaos społeczny i pozwalają publiczności na odbieranie sztuki jako okazji do spotkania. Obrazy i obiekty tworzone przez Churrucę prezentowane były na szeregu wystaw.

Bridging the Silence
Visual and sound installation

Bridging the Silence is a visual and sound installation designed to be shown on a pedestrian bridge, created by Hrvoslava Brkušić, Croatian multimedia & sound artist; Deirdre Cartmill, N. Irish poet, and Beatriz Churruca, Basque visual artist & Performer.

It focuses on representing the emotional journey survivors move through as they pass from the storm inside to peace. Crossing the bridge therefore becomes both a symbolic and literal reflection of this inner journey.

The sound installation uses personal testimonies from survivors at its heart. The installation will change and grow as it moves from city to city, collecting new stories.

A visceral experience of sounds, testimonies, music, poems; and oneself’s silence…

Artists involved in the project:
Hrvoslava Brkušić (Zagreb, Croatia) – graduated film editing at the Academy of Dramatic arts in Zagreb and holds a MA at the Department for animation and new media at the Academy of fine arts, Zagreb. As a film editor, she contributed to the series of documentary, feature and experimental films such as documentary film The Blockade directed by Igor Bezinović about students’ protests and a struggle for free education, and video-work by same director entitled “Unmediated democracy demands unmediated Space” in collaboration with Pula group in the framework of Architecture Biennale in Venice.

Deirdre Cartmill (Belfast, Northern Ireland) – poet, graduate from Queen’s University (MA in Creative Writing). She received Literature Awards from the Arts Council in 2012, 2008, 2003 and 2000. She’s previously been shortlisted for a Hennessy Literary Award and been a finalist in the Scottish International Open Poetry Competition. Cartmill has published two poetry collections The Return of the Buffalo (Lagan Press, 2013) and Midnight Solo (Lagan Press, 2004). She is also an award winning screenwriter and has written for film, television and radio.

Beatriz Churruca (Navarra, Spain) – graduate from University of Barcelona, Fine Arts Department (speciality: painting). Fascinated by dance theatre, she studied dance in Barcelona and often uses her body and movement in her work. Churruca is a creative and independent project manager involved in a variety of artistic projects. As an artist she creates objects, images, situations and works structures that reflect the disorder of society and allow people to use art as a meeting place. Her works have been shown in a framework of different exhibitions.
