1942 rok. Kresy. Silna i niezależna Eliza rozpoczyna pracę jako nauczycielka w wiejskiej szkole. Tam poznaje Stacha – unikającego obowiązków, za to lubiącego kłopoty chłopaka, który staje się obiektem jej fascynacji i rodzącej się w niej wielkiej miłości. Stach zostaje jednak zesłany na roboty przymusowe na tereny III Rzeszy. Po jego wyjeździe, Eliza rodzi ich wspólne dziecko i wraz z niemowlęciem na rękach rusza śladami ukochanego. Odnajduje go we Frankfurcie i tam próbują przeżyć, mimo nieludzkich warunków i ciągłych upokorzeń. Eliza cały czas walczy o swoją godność, życie dziecka i – co najtrudniejsze – o miłość Stacha, który początkowo uznawał ich relację za przelotny romans. Teraz w ogniu wojennej próby oboje poznają się naprawdę, a istniejąca między nimi więź zmienia się wraz z upływem czasu.

The film begins in 1942 in the Borderlands. Strong and independent Eliza gave birth to Stach’s child without marriage. Now, together with the baby, he sets off to look for his beloved, sent to work in the Third Reich. Eliza is a village teacher, an idealist, and her beloved Stach is a village brawler. Eliza finds Stach in Frankfurt and decides to bind her fate with that of her child’s father. Eliza and Stach start working on the farm in Germany, they are hungry and humiliated. Eliza is constantly fighting for dignity, for the child’s life – and, most difficult of all, for the love of Stach, who initially considered their relationship to be a fleeting affair. Now, in the heat of war, the two of them really get to know each other, and the bond between them changes over time.
